www.barbaramacdougall.com Pure Silver Jewellery
I use Precious Metal Clay (PMC) to make my silver leaves, flowers and twig bracelets. PMC consists of micron-sized particles of silver in a clay and water binder. I brush appropriate flowers and/or the vein side of leaves with liquid PMC (slip). Each layer of slip is allowed to dry naturally. Over the course of several weeks, depending on its size, each leaf or flower will receive up to 25 coats of slip. When thoroughly dry, the clay-coated items are fired in a kiln at 1290F whereupon the organic material and clay burn off, and pure silver remains. The silver is cleaned with a wire brush, drilled, weighed and made into earrings and necklaces.
These pieces are one of a kind and, since I use real leaves and flowers, very seasonal. Some leaves and plants don't "work", but please contact me if you have ideas or suggestions for plants for me to try, or you have an idea for a special order.
Prices vary because the price is based on the weight of each individual leaf or flower, plus added semi-precious or other stones and findings. I use non-tarnishing Argentium silver jump rings and wire for earwires, and sterling chains or adjustable leather thongs on the necklaces. If you have a favourite style of chain or prefer a certain length, I can provide it.
I use certified Sleeping Beauty, Nacozari, Kingman and Campo Frio turquoise, as well as other A-grade stones and Swarovski crystals.
Note that pure silver will tarnish over time, therefore it is advised that these items be stored in zip-lock bags or use the anti-tarnish strip I provide in your jewellery box. To preserve the beauty of all jewellery, never store it in your bathroom, and remove when showering. Use lotions, hair spray and perfume sparingly and before putting on your jewellery. |
